  • An awful end to an awful season. How does the old idiom go? Nothing as certain in life than death and taxes. Perhaps Manchester United making a hash of a managerial appointment can now be added. A draw at relegated Huddersfield last week, a defeat at home to relegated Cardiff this week. The final insult in a year full of them. It is at best unclear whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the man at the wheel, is capable of driving this great club in the right direction. Since that night in Paris, United have been utterly dreadful. Twelve games, two wins, two draws and eight defeats. They have limped to the line, tripped up and then crawled over it. Eight points from a possible 27 is relegation form.    Nathaniel Mendez-Laing jumps in the air as he celebrates his early penalty which put Cardiff in the lead at Old Trafford Mendez-Laing is all smiles after the Cardiff man netted his side’s second goal as the Bluebirds finished the season on a high Mendez-Laing sends David de Gea the wrong way as the relegated side take a surprise lead at the home of Manchester United De Gea looks dejected after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Cardiff on the final day of the Premier League season Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s double, one in each half, gave Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds their first league victory over their hosts in 59 years. The doomed Welsh side, with nothing to play for, deserved it. It meant United finished this shocking year in sixth, with no Champions League spot and more significantly 32 points behind champions City and 31 off second-placed Liverpool. Some of those who remained for what was termed a lap of appreciation (there was no honour), with Old Trafford emptying faster than a champagne bottle at the Etihad, voiced their dissent. Empty seats in the stands and empty seats in the press box – there could be more journalists here on Monday for the staff versus media match.     Paul Pogba looks downbeat after Cardiff scored their second goal of the afternoon to pile misery on Manchester United Mendez-Laing pokes home at the back post to double the scoring and his personal tally for the afternoon PLAYER RATINGS, LEAGUE TABLE AND MATCH ZONE  MANCHESTER UNITED XI: (4-3-3): De Gea 7; Dalot 4 (Valencia 74), Smalling 5, Jones 5 (Martial 46), Young 5.5; Pereira 5.5 (Gomes 74,), McTominay 5, Pogba 5.5; Lingard 5.5, Rashford 7, Greenwood 6  Subs not used: Mata, Fred, Romero, Garner Booked: Pereira, Pogba, Lingard Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 4 CARDIFF XI: (4-2-3-1): Etheridge 8; Peltier 6.5, Morrison 7, Ecuele Manga 7, Bennett 7; Gunnarsson 7 (Richards 58, 6.5), Bacuna 7; Mendez-Laing 8 (Hoilett 80), De Cordova-Reid 7, Murphy 7.5; Zohore 7 (Ward 73, 6.5)Subs not used: Cunningham, Harris, Murphy, HealeyGoals: Mendez-Laing (23, 54)Booked: Bacuna Manager: Neil Warnock 8 Referee: Jonathan Moss (County Durham) 6Attendance: 74,457  Season at a glance Live tables Fixtures Scores Premier League Premier League Championship League One League Two Scott
